THE PROJECT
Social Scented Dreaming is a collaborative research project between the Italian Perfumery Institute and Freenspire, with the scientific contribution of Social Dreaming International Network, exploring the connection between dreams and scents.
Social Dreaming studies the role of dreams in understanding social reality, individual interactions, and the development of creative thinking. Scents play a key role in shaping our dream experiences and associative pathways.
In this project, we’ll pair olfactory stimuli with the Social Dreaming method to explore how fragrance influences the content of our dreams. The project combines digital community engagement with field research.
Initial findings have be presented at Esxence 2025 during the IPI conference. The project will continue throughout the year, engaging both the Esxence online and live communities.

The practice of sharing, associating and working with dreams to identify social trends and dynamics. It was conceived and developed by Gordon Lawrence and his colleagues at the Tavistock Institute (London) in the 1980s. Since then, social dreaming has revealed its potential, developed, spread around the world and been used in social research, art projects, organizational consultancy and training.
